Twilight Sparkle Hair Tutorial by countschlick Twilight Sparkle Hair Tutorial by countschlick
BEHOLD! MEIN LATEST CREATION! ZE BEAST; IT LIVES! :iconfluttershylaughplz:

Anyway, this monster of a tutorial ended up being about 25% longer than Fluttershy's, and I'll cry if I calculate how much longer it is than my Rarity and Pinkie Pie tutorials. The added length makes a little bit of sense since this is the first tutorial that involves quite a bit of trimming.

Also, I decided I would call the hair on her forehead "bangs", so feel free to laugh endlessly if you've never heard that term before. Somewhat ironically, although I use "bangs" to describe Twilight's forelock-thingy, the term is derived from the word "bangtail", a name for the tail of a horse cut straight across, or the name for the horse itself. So, if you happen to be a time travelling American from the 1860's, struggling to understand the terrifying technology the future has presented to you, this tutorial will probably break whatever is left of your battered mind.

I would also like to thank everyone again for your questions and comments regarding my tutorials, and the support you give me when I'm trampling though my self-assigned due dates like an elephant barging through an unfinished world record domino toppling attempt. I also love seeing the results of other people's styling both here, on deviantART, and in the ponychan thread.

And, of course, My Little Pony, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Twilight Sparkle, Owloysius and the Hasbro toys are all owned by Hasbro.

Anyway, I'm off to go replenish my stock of mana crystals. I've used up so many of them that I cannot even cook myself breakfast in the morning. I've been living off of 'Lucky Charms' and other slightly less magical meals for the past few days.

EDIT: Here are the Rainbow Dash and Applejack tutorials as well!

If only I had a Twilight Sparkle figure so I could follow your tutorial...

And here is where I'd put all my MlP merchandise...if I had any!

I've heard some bad things about trying this with tinsel-haired ponies. I would suggest trimming the tinsel strands out before styling them, which is actually a little less work than it seems.

I bought the beanie baby Twilight (I actually found one in my Walgreen's that had her sans wings, just what I was looking for!) and her bangs were sticking up (like Pinkie's) and her tail was a bit long for my tastes.  My hand was shaking when I had to trim her. ^^;

At any rate, though the Beanie Babies are more accurate than the ones you're working with, I have to thank you for this lovely tutorial.  It helped so much and now Twilight's mane is behaving!

Hmm. You may have to secure her hair again and give it another heat treatment under the lamp or other heat source you used, and possibly get the hair hotter than before.

Hey there ^-^
Just a quick question. On some of the mlp figures when you wet the hair and comb it, it separates and looks a bit of a mess. Why does this happen?

The hair is probably just extra messy. Try brushing it while it is being rinsed in hotter water and see if that helps.

Unfortunately, I'm going back to teacher school soon, so I won't have much spare time for much of anything, including pony styling. :P

aww
see this is why school should be illegal
cause it interferes with ponies having canon hair styles

This is so freaking cool! I was browsing looking for how to add hair realistically to a photo Im doing and saw this, thought I'd click due to my daughters (and my own ;) obsesion with MLP. I thought this was a drawing hair tutorial and I was so surprised to see this!

It is a disgrace the way this company is turning out these dolls, and I want to do this sooo bad! I just got her all of them to complete her collection, and she has tons of my 'old' ones, but this new group of ponies is pretty cool I must say and making her hair this way looks like it will take a lot of time but something her and I can do together and she will think its awesome! I see you have the other ponies as well! Do you have access to the new equestria dolls that they have made? Id love to see how to 'spruce' up their hair as well, since it just comes all tangled and raggetty!

I bought her the dolls and the movie for her christmas and santa bought her the rest of the ponies to add to the group; rarity, another twilight sparkle that has wings, and a few others, but anyways thank you this is great! and i am going to look at your other tutorials as well and watch your page  cuz you are one awesome gal in my book just from seeing this! ;) best wishes

I say go for it. This Twilight is my only one. Styling your only Twilight will encourage you to be as patient and conscientious as you should be to style her hair properly.

I would advise against it. Hairgel and glue tend to make a mess and can make the hair look grungy.

Does the lamp have to be, "hot"? Like, warm. To dry her? Mine for now is sitting in front of the window. Also, can she be air-dried? Like with air. A fan. Or just sitting out in the open?

The hair needs to get up to about 50 degrees Celcius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) for the curls to set properly. If the window sill you set your pony on is difficult to rest your hand on because it is hot, then the window is probably warm enough. Otherwise, you may need to find another heat setting method.

Ok. My rarity turned out perfect! One of the straws on her head curl is still in there, but you can't see it, and it turned out great and didn't fall! My twilight also turned out great! The bangs stayed together, with only a very tiny gap in between.
thanks!

If her bangs are still sticking up after following my tutorial, you will have to get them hotter. This may require using a different heat setting method. I talk about this a bit in the tutorial beside the last picture of Twilight under the lamp.

Okay. Have a look through my tutorial. It may give you some ideas. I wove her hair and squished it against her face while wet to keep her bangs together. With her hair secured against her face with an elastic, I then dried it under a hot lamp. The heat from the lamp helped set her hair in place, just like a curling iron does for people hair.

Oh! And I don't have a desk lamp, can I use a hair dryer or would that melt the hair? Or can I just leave her out to dry?

A hair dryer should work, although be careful not to blow the hair into a mess.
