Fluttershy Hair Tutorial by countschlick Fluttershy Hair Tutorial by countschlick
. . . AND NO CONTINUITY ERRORS WERE MADE THAT DAY.

First off, I'd like to apologize for the length of this tutorial. It is just over twice as long as the Pinkie Pie one. (~1.5 times longer than my Rarity tutorial.) Although it is a lot longer, I think the process of styling Fluttershy is easier than styling Rarity or Pinkie Pie due to the lack of curling. However, the process is more complicated, so I felt it was necessary to add additional instruction to maximize clarity while sacrificing brevity. I asked myself whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of an ambiguous tutorial or to take arms against a sea of obscurity, and by opposing them: tolerate a "tl;dr" or two, and ultimately figured I'd go for wordy and picture-y and hope for the best.

Anyway, I'd like to thank everyone again for your comments and questions regarding my other tutorials. I'm always happy to see the results of other people's styling both here, on deviantART, and in the ponychan thread.

And, of course, My Little Pony, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Fluttershy, Photo Finish and the Hasbro toys are all owned by Hasbro.

UPDATE: I also have Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack tutorials as well, for those that are interested.

OBLIGATORY DD EDIT: SWEET AUNT JEMIMA! A DD! I have only ever dreamed of this happening. MY HEAD ASPLODE!

How long would it take if you used a hair drier?

It may be a little quicker, but it may make her hair a little messy. If your hair drier has a low setting, use that.

Okay. Just how long, exactly? ^^;

Just long enough for the hair to dry and get hot. Maybe less than a minute, maybe more. It is very difficult to pin down an exact time due to all of variables involved.

In addition to the epic show-accuracy of the hair, you're also a hilarious person!

Trying this with Fluttershy and Rarity now; we bought the bagged ponies and the hair seems a bit short. They were 2.99 as opposed to the regular boxed ones at 5.99. Example of new bagged ponies at Target

I followed your tutorial for Twilight and she turned out great... However, Twilight and Rarity are the only ones I currently have who don't have tinsel hair. Should I even try to style tinsel hair or spare myself the pain and suffering?

Eh, I've seen moderate success styling tinsel hair, but if it were me, I would probably cut out the tinsel before styling. I think there is about one tinsel strand per hair plug, so 20 to 30 in total, so it isn't as laborious a job as it seems.

Just wanted to drop you a message to thank you for this guide. I just finished working on my Fluttershy figure's hair today and letting it settle in place as I type this. I've been wanting to fix her look for sometime now, and this guide was very helpful in not only walking me through the procedure, but motivating me as well. Thank you again.

Just checking- would this work with the Fluttershy that has the wings that move when you push the necklace? Crystal motion or whatever? It doesn't have tinsel, sooo...

I think it should. It might be tricky if her legs move around really easily, but I don't think that would be much of a problem.

can you use a barrette instead of a battery?
Reply
:iconcountschlick:
countschlick Featured By Owner Nov 4, 2013
The battery isn't really meant to hold hair in place, but rather act as a cylindrical spacer to produce the curl in the top of Fluttershy's mane. Also, keeping the battery in place by pulling Fluttershy's mane around it acts as a way of checking that the top section of her mane is tight and neat. For these reasons, I don't think using a barette will work here.

Hehe, i kinda mean as if the barrette was acting like the battery, not clipped on... Ahhhh this does not make sense.

If the barrette is cylindrical, I think it will work.

I think out of all the ponies, Fluttershy is the easiest and realistic to style, her's is more simple while everyone else is jut too radical XD

I cut too much of the hair off and missed a step so her hair looks like pinkie's in party of one no, despite that she still looks more like Fluttershy than when I started.
